Biography:

Richard “Austria” Schermann was born on January 7, 1995, in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. Together with his siblings, he grew up on a farm in Lower Austria. After finishing school, he moved to Vienna, where he studied history.

He had a passion for sports and music and played the guitar in his own band. He had visited Ukraine before the full-scale invasion and became deeply interested in its culture and in the Ukrainian people’s struggle.

When the full-scale invasion began, he immediately volunteered to take part in the defense of Ukraine. He fought across the major sectors of the front, most notably during the Kharkiv counteroffensive and in the battles of Bakhmut and Chasiv Yar. For his bravery, he was awarded the “Golden Cross” by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. His comrades knew him for his dedication, determination, and professionalism.

After the war, he planned to live in Kyiv and start a family.
On January 20, he was killed in battle, defending Europe and the place that became his new home.

Мій неймовірний коханий Річард. ❤️‍🩹 Відважний, вірним своїм ідеям, сильний духом та тілом. Здавалося, нічого не може статися з цим чоловіком. Він приїхав в самому початку повномасштабного вторгнення і збирався боротися до кінця. Пройшов всі гарячі точки, без сумніву йшов в бій, любив свою справу. Як будь яка дівчина, я мріяла, щоб він лишився зі мною, але для нього це було надзвичайно важливо, він повторював «Я люблю бути солдатом. Я прийшов сюди з певної причини і буду боротися до кінця, я не можу полишити своїх друзів». Він був з тих європейців, які розуміли, що це не лише боротьба за Україну, але за Європу.

Він був надзвичайно позитивним, люблячим, він підтримував мене сидячи в бліндажі з моїми незначними проблемами і завжди був поряд наскільки міг. Мене завжди дивувало, як цей чоловік поєднує в собі цю безмежну мужність та ніжність до мене, я безмежно його поважаю та безмежно кохаю. Я не можу сказати, що кохала, тому що продовжую кохати та підтримувати цей уявний зв’язок. Я слухала ці неймовірні історії від його побратимів, які б він навряд чи розповів мені сам або розповів применшуючи свої досягнення, і закохувалась все більше. Цей чоловік вартий того, щоб пам’ятати та шанувати, як і кожного полеглого воїна, вклад яких неоціненний та втрата яких невимовна та нічим не зможе бути вилікувана. Ні часом, ні словами. Навіки в моєму серці, мій коханий Річард. ❤️‍🩹
