Biography:

A true example of the new generation of modern Ukrainian intelligentsia and a devoted choice of patriotism and nationalism.

His path began in the spring of 2022, when he voluntarily stepped up to defend Ukraine — its borders, its history and identity, his home, and his loved ones. During the period of struggle, he carried out combat missions on the Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, and Donetsk directions, and on the last of these the occupier took his life. Throughout the war, Roman sought where he could be most useful, moving from a reconnaissance gunner-spotter to a company combat medic within the 12th “Azov” Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine.

As a man devoted to his work, Roman Lutsyk was killed while evacuating wounded fighters and providing them with medical aid, placing duty above his own life. He was “not born for war”, yet he always made the choice to fight — and called others to do the same.

At the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he raised a large amount of funds to help the military (more than 2 million UAH), while choosing the ranks he wanted to join. In May 2022, he chose the DFTG formation “Liubart”.

In the summer of 2022, the detachment departed on a combat mission to the territory of Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts.

On 12 February 2024, Roman, as part of the “Liubart” unit, joined the 12th Special Purpose Brigade “Azov” as the 5th Special Purpose Battalion. From spring, he fought in the Serebrianske Forestry on the Kreminna direction, but in September he transferred to the Toretsk direction of Bakhmut District due to the escalation of the situation, where he died (near the settlement of New York). No matter how difficult the situation was, Roman did not refuse and always stepped forward. He saved dozens of lives and taught hundreds of people how to save lives.

Together with other warriors, they searched for and evacuated the bodies of fallen brothers-in-arms, because they considered it their duty to bring them back to their native land. He, too, was brought to rest from the settlement of New York in Donetsk Oblast to his native Lviv, to the Field of Mars, where he joined his heroic friends.
